How to use an LED mask so it actually does something

Using the SilkSkin mask at home

An LED mask is one of the least demanding things in a skincare routine. It also only works if you use it, and most people who say a mask did nothing for them used it a handful of times over a month. Here is how to get the most out of it.

Clean, dry skin

Light has to reach the skin. Makeup, sunscreen and oils sit in the way, so wash your face and dry it before you put the mask on. Serums and moisturiser go on afterwards, not before.

Use the eye shields, every time

The LEDs are bright at close range. The silicone eye shields in the box block the light from your eyes. Wear them for every session to protect your eyes. It takes two seconds and it is the one rule we would not bend.

Ten minutes, once a day

A session is ten minutes. Longer does not help, and there is no benefit to running it twice in a day. What matters is doing it most days for a stretch of weeks. Tie it to something you already do, such as the ten minutes after brushing your teeth at night, and it stops being a decision.

Give it eight to twelve weeks

Skin renews slowly. The trials that report improvements measure it after eight to twelve weeks of regular use, and that is the honest timeframe. Take a photo in the same light on day one and compare it at week twelve. Memory is a poor judge of gradual change.

Keep it clean

Wipe the inside of the mask with a damp cloth after use and let it dry before it goes back in the travel bag. No alcohol wipes on the silicone.

SilkSkin is a general wellness product. If you have a skin condition, take medication that increases sensitivity to light, or are pregnant, ask your doctor before use.
